Uddrag

Since the Vietnam War is frequently referred to as the first "TV war," our approach has been journalistic. Each section is divided into five parts: "who, what, where, when, and why" - the traditional questions a reporter is supposed to ask and answer when thoroughly researching a story.

"What?" presents a short background essay.

"Who?" offers identifications of significant personalities.

"When?" directs attention to the specific events that occurred during the period covered in each section.

"Why?" offers discussion questions, suggested activities, and research topics.

"Where?" refers to questions or projects involving the locations of major events—in Vietnam or the United States.

We hope that this division will provide a useful framework for the teacher, offering flexibility of presentation. Teachers can adapt the material to a minimal use if only a few classroom periods are available for the study of Vietnam, or an in-depth examination, over an entire semester, if time allows.

Vietnam: An Historical Introduction
Although the history of any region is the product of a complex mix of culture and circumstance, in many ways, for Vietnam, geography is destiny. To understand Vietnam's history it is imperative to have a clear picture of the land and the region.

Vietnam's geographical position relative to China has been paramount in shaping its political and cultural history. On the map, Vietnam is directly below China -- an elongated, 1,000-mile-long "S," containing in its northern loop the great population center of the Red River delta and in its southern loop that of the Mekong River delta. Vietnam attained this shape through slow, painful expansion from its northern delta (settled before the Christian era) to the Mekong region. This expansion took
